In a carbothermal process for the production of substantially iron-free silicon, the unreacted mixture of oxide and carbonaceous reducing agent is contacted with gaseous chlorine before these constituents reach their reduction temperature. The chlorine may be supplied from the commencement of heating until, or prior to, the initiation of the reduction reaction or may be supplied subsequent to the commencement of heating until the reduction temperature is reached. The process is preferably carried out in an arc furnace and the chlorine supplied through a hollow electrode.ALSO:In a carbothermal process for the production of substantially iron-free silicon-aluminium alloy, the unreacted mixture of oxide and carbonaceous reducing agent is contacted with gaseous chlorine before these constituents reach their reduction temperature.
