A charge-storage pickup tube has a photoemissive surface 4 and light-impermeable means 11 for receiving photo-electrons from the surface, and the surface is scanned by a light spot through the space 10a surrounding the means 11. A symmetrical collection of photo-electrons is achieved. According to a further feature, it is arranged that no part of the scanning light passing through surface 4 can strike primary photo-cathode 2 and cause spurious emission. As described surface 4 is a mosaic upon a semi-conductive glass target 3 receiving a primary electron image from cathode 2 and receiver 11 is a multiplier.
