The storage life of conserved whole blood is prolonged by adding to it from 0.0001% to 2.0% by weight of one or more alkali metal salts of chlorophyllins dissolved for the purpose in an isotonic solution of sodium chloride. The solution, e.g. of sodium chlorophyllins, is added to fresh blood immediately after its removal from the donor, the blood being first stabilized by an addition of sodium citrate-dextrose solution.
