Break-in compositions for internal combustion engines

A fuel for running-in an internal combustion engine comprises an oil-soluble chromium salt of an organic acid in a concentration of at least 0.05 grams of chromium per gallon of fuel. The compound may be a chromium alkyl salicylate or a chromium naphthenate, and the fuel may contain up to 10 grams per gallon of chromium. The compound may be added to the fuel as a concentrate in a spindle oil or in benzene, the concentrate containing 1 to 12.5 grams of chromium per pint. The fuel may be a gasoline or diesel oil. After the engine has been run in the oil system and fuel supply are drained and refilled preparatory to normal running. Examples are given.
