966,764. Handling transistors. MULLARD Ltd. Jan. 25, 1961, No. 2942/61. Heading B8S. Transistors are positioned into the holes of a jig by means of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1. The apparatus consists of a hollow drum 2 pivoted at 36 to which is fixed plate 1. The bottom surface 4 of plate 1 is formed with end plate 8 and with holes 10 and channels 11, the channels 11 extending into drum 2. Transistors are introduced in mass into the inside of drum 2 and ten of these are to be caused to fall into the respective holes 10 ready for placing into the corresponding holes of a jig. This is done by oscillating the drum 2 together with plate 1 through a cycle about the axis 36. As the plate rotates clockwise the transistors move from drum 2 along surface 4 of plate 1 till they meet end plate 8, and as the plate rotates anticlockwise the transistors move back towards drum 2 along surface 4 and ten of these are captured in so doing by suction introduced into holes 10. The rest fall back into drum 2 which is now in position of Fig. 1. The ten transistors retained in holes 10 are then blown into the corresponding holes of a jig therebelow by air jets introduced at 17. The jig is removed and replaced by another jig, and the cycle of drum 2 is repeated. Supply of jigs, Fig. 6.-Jigs are conveyed towards plate 1 by belt 47, the jigs being reeased singly to a position underneath plate 1 by means of escapement arms 55 and 56. The jig after being filled with transistors is discharged at 57. The drum and plate unit is oscillated by a motor at 41, the drive passing through pin and slot 38; and support shaft 43 is withdrawable against spring 40a to free the drum and plate unit when required.
