A load container 20 detachably secured to a tiltable framework of a road vehicle is transferred therefrom to a stand comprising rails 22, Fig. 7, by operation of the tilting mechanism 13 of the vehicle combined with suitable bodily movement of the vehicle as a whole. The container is provided with rollers 24 at its rear end and skids 25 at its front end. To transfer the container from the vehicle the latter is backed to run the rollers 24 on to the rails 22 and the tilting mechanism is operated to raise the skids 25 above the rails until the container is wholly over the stand, when it is lowered, the skids preventing its further movement when the vehicle is withdrawn. The same or another container on a stand is subsequently picked up by a reverse procedure. Releasable fastenings to secure the container to the tiltable vehicle frame comprise spring-loaded plungers 28, Fig. 4, with bayonet type peg-and-slot retainers 30, 32. Two such plungers extending longitudinally of the vehicle are positioned at the front end and two which extend laterally are at the rear end.
