A compatible mixture of polymers is made by mixing an aqueous solution of a water-soluble polymer having one or more amide groups in the side chains with an aqueous dispersion or latex of a water-insoluble polymer, the weight of water-soluble polymer being from 3 to 60% of the weight of the water-insoluble polymer, the aqueous composition thus obtained being homogenised, and the water separated from the polymers by evaporation at a temperature not exceeding 100 DEG C. Water-soluble polymers specified are homopolymers and copolymers of acrylamides, maleamides, fumaramides, itaconamides, citraconamides, maleamates, fumaramates, itaconamates and citraconamates; preferred being polyacrylamide and polymethacrylamide. Water-insoluble copolymers specified are homopolymers and copolymers of monoolefines, diolefines, styrene and its derivatives, acrylic acids and esters and nitriles thereof, vinyl esters, vinyl and vinylidenehalides, vinyl ethers and vinyl ketones. Also used may be dispersions of alkyl resins, polyamides, polycarbonates, cellulose and its derivatives, aminoplasts and natural rubber. The process is particularly applied to the production of vulcanizable mixtures composed of the amide polymer and a natural or synthetic rubber. In the examples: (1) a mixture of polyacrylamide and natural rubber is formed and is vulcanized after incorporating vulcanizing agents and carbon black, therein; (2) as in (1) but using polymethacrylamide as water-soluble polymer; (3) as in (1) but using a butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer in place of natural rubber; (4) a mixture of polymethacrylamide and a butadiene-acrylonitrile-methacrylic acid copolymer is formed, and is vulcanized with zinc oxide; (5) as in (1) but using a butadiene-styrene copolymer in place of natural rubber; (6) a mixture of polymethacrylamide and a butadiene-styrene copolymer is formed and then vulcanized; (7) a mixture of polyacrylamide and polychloroprene is formed and then vulcanized; (8) a mixture of polyacrylamide and an isobutylene-isoprene copolymer is formed and vulcanized; (9) a mixture of polymethacrylamide, a butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer and polyvinyl chloride is formed, and is then vulcanized; and (10) as in (9) but using a mixture of a butadiene-acrylonitrile-methacrylic acid copolymer, polyacrylamide and polyvinyl chloride.
