1,006,289. Filaments, films etc., containing cellulose crystallite aggr#gates. FMC. CORPORATION. April 2, 1962 [May 31, 1961], No. 12601/62. Heading B5B. A shaped article (such as a filament or film) comprising a mixture of a cellulosic material and cellulose crystallite aggregates may be made by mixing a film-or filament-forming cellulose ester or ether and the cellulose crystallite aggregates or derivatives thereof and extruding or casting the solution to form a filament or film. Alternatively a mixture of viscose and the cellulose crystallite aggregates or derivatives thereof may be extruded or cast to form a filament or film. The term " cellulose crystallite aggregates " (also referred to as level-off D.P. cellulose) is defined as the crystalline acid-insoluble residue remaining after the acid hydrolysis of cellulose. It is washed free from acid and recovered. The preparation of preferred aggregates for use in the present invention is described in Specifications 874,945 and 970,111. These aggregates have a particle size ranging from below 1 to about 250 to 300 microns. Instead of cellulose crystallite aggregates there may be used derivatives of these aggregates such as aldehyde derivatives, carboxyl derivatives, mixed aldehyde-carboxyl derivaties, ether derivatives and ester derivatives. Filaments and films according to the invention may be produced by continuously injecting an aqueous slurry of the cellulose crystallite aggregates into a viscose just prior to extrusion and then extruding the viscose into a coagulating bath in the usual manner.
