A method of measuring directly the quotient between a volume of flow Q of a fluid and a second value G, comprises determining the value of this quotient Q/G by the position assumed by a float 8 placed within the fluid-flow to be measured, the float being subjected to a dynamic force resulting from a pressure drop caused by the float and to a second force which is directly proportional to the square of the second value G, the position of the float being determined by the balance of these two forces. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4, the second value G is a second flow which passes through a second tube with a second float 9 connected by a thread to the first float 8 so that movement of one float causes movement of the other float. The tube containing the float 8 has a variable cross-section. In another embodiment Fig. 2 (not shown) the float 8 is connected to a cylinder to which a torque is applied, the second value being the speed of rotation of the cylinder (4). The apparatus may be used to indicate fuel consumption, the flow of fuel being the value Q and the second value G being derived from the speed of the vehicle such as by the spindle of the tachymeter rotating an impeller to give a fluid-flow proportional to the velocity of the vehicle.
