An electric butt or flash-butt welding machine comprises two clamping heads, one being movable in the upsetting direction and being carried on guide bars which are secured to the other, stationary, clamping head to extend therefrom in cantilever fashion and are arranged symmetrically to the welding point a doubleacting piston being secured to the free end of each guide bar to be received in cylinders fixed to the movable clamping head. The fixed clamping head 1 has an upper jaw 11 actuated by an hydraulic cylinder 13 and a lower jaw 12 actuated by a hydraulic cylinder 14, the workpiece being adjustable in the manner described in Specification 817,166. The movable head 2 which has a fixed lower jaw 22 and an upper jaw 21 movable by an hydraulic cylinder 23 is supported by rings 31, 41 on guide bars 3, 4 attached to the head 1. The bars are horizontal and in end elevation are on a line drawn through the weld point. A piston 51 on the end of the bar 4 is in a cylinder 52 carried on the head 2 and hydraulic fluid is admitted to either side of the piston by pipes 551, 561. A device 6 attached to the piston 51 has a highpressure cylinder 62 connected to one side of the cylinder 52 through a passage 57 in the end of the bar 4 and a piston 65 in a low-pressure pneumatic cylinder 64, supplied by a pipe 641. A similar device is provided at the end of the bar 3. To feed the workpiece forward oil is supplied by pipe 551 and to apply upsetting force the pipe 551 is closed and air is supplied by pipe 641 to move piston rod 63 of the piston 65 to produce increased pressure on the piston 51.
