1,064,299. Surge damping. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. Dec. 9, 1963 [Dec. 12, 1962], No. 48485/63. Heading F2V. [Also in Division G3] A liquid-surge reservoir 10 has a connection 26 to a system, e.g. the primary cooling-system of a nuclear reactor and spaced from the connection 29 is a tube 46 leading to a conical insurge baffle 12. A solid or perforated secondary-baffle 52 lies in the baffle 12 above the tube 46. The reservoir 10 contains vaporizable liquid maintained at a given level 20 whilst a spray nozzle 36 opens into the vapour space above the liquid to introduce coolant thereto; immersion heaters 38 are disposed in the liquid to vaporize and so pressurize the system through the connection 26. Connections 40, 42, 44 are also provided for liquid-level controlling-means, a pressure measuring device, and a safety valve. The reservoir serves to maintain the system pressure within set limits, the heater 38 generating vapour to increase the pressure and the nozzle 36 injecting coolant when a reduced pressure is needed. Should a surge occur in the system, the momentum is dissipated by the baffle 52, the baffle 12 containing the insurging liquid; if an outsurge follows at once the same liquid is returned to the system, if not the liquid mixes with and is heated to the temperature of the other liquid in the reservoir. The reservoir may be used in a situation where both or either are of its pressure regulation and surge damping properties are required.
