In a fatigue testing machine for testing a specimen under selectable loads, the specimen 35 is clamped between a fixed jaw structure 24 and a movable clamp structure 36, mounted on vertically extending flexible bars 49 to allow lateral movement of the clamp structure 36. The load is applied to the specimen 35 through bars 50 connected to a lever structure 55 pivoted at 56b. An electromagnetic vibrating device 14 effects motion in the direction of arrow 60 which is translated by pivoting movement of lever 55 about 56b to effect axial movement in the direction indicated by arrow 61. Pre-loading of the sample is effected by a spring 63. In use, the load generator 14 provides either a random or other load which is applied to the specimen under test, the specimen being under a pre-load determined by the spring structure 63.
