A lathe for machining the inner and outer edges of flat annular discs comprises a platform 5 rotatable about a vertical axis to move a stack of blanks to be machined while moving a stack of finished discs to be unloaded. The tools are carried on a slide 3 and a spindle 25 fed by a piston in a cylinder 26. Cuttings are removed through suction ducts 16, 15. The spindle 25 passes through a sleeve 21 rotated by a continuously-driven electric motor through an electrically-operated clutch. The sleeve 25 can be clamped against the pile of discs on a carrier 11 by a piston 23. In operation, fluid-pressure rack-and-pinion means 7, 9, 8 and 17, 18, 19 are operated to swing a pile of discs supported internally by a guide 14 into the machining position. The sleeve 24 clamps the discs and the finished discs are removed. A cylinder device 13 is operated to withdraw the guide 14 and it is swung aside by the means 17, 18, 19.
