1,003,215. Cooling reactors. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. Dec. 13, 1961 [Dec. 23, 1960], No. 44659/61. Drawings to Specification. Heading G6C. In a swimming pool reactor the fuel is isolated from the pool within an aluminium housing which provides a re-entrant path for a flow of pressurized coolant liquid through the fuel. The fuel plates are cylindrical and are formed of uranium clad in aluminium. The plates are reversibly mounted so as to provide a higher fuel burn-up rate. Beams of fast and thermal neutrons are provided along horizontal paths from the core through apertures in the concrete lining of the pool. Pneumatic and hydraulically operated sample carriers permit irradiation of samples in the high neutron flux zones of the core. The coolant liquid is circulated in a closed circuit through a degasifier and demineralizer.
