[Also in Group XXXV] In a rolling-mill the thickness of a material 6 is reduced by the bite between co-operating rolls 1. Rollers 9 are positioned on the centreline and at one edge of the material in non-slip frictional contact. The difference between the angular velocities imparted to the rollers 9 is determined by an automatic electric control system (see Group XXXV) controlling a valve 11b to vary the cooling oil supply through a pipe 10b to sprayers 11 mounted adjacent to the mid-point of the roll 1. The variation in the oil flow controls the camber of the upper roll 1 so as to tend to maintain equality between the velocities of the rollers 9. The valve 11b may be alternatively controlled manually by observation of a visual indicator associated with the control system. It is stated that the automatic control may also control strip tension or screw down force. Any oil remaining on the upper roll 1 after the bite is removed by a scraper 11c. In a tandem rolling-mill the signals derived from a pair of rollers 9 may be utilized to modify at least one controlling factor of a pair of preceding or succeeding rolls 1 in the series.
