In wheeled apparatus for laying tar-coated sheet material from a roll T on to an adhesivecoated surface 31, the material 22 is passed over a full-width guide roller 20 and beneath two parallel rows of individual pressing rollers 13 staggered across the width of the apparatus, each roller 13 being mounted in a respective stirrup 12 pivoted at 14 to a square spring-loaded telescopic tube 6. The apparatus comprises a T-shaped frame 2-3 having a U-brace 4 carrying a spare material roll 19, and has pivotally-retractable wheels 23 carried by arms 24 on a shaft 25 actuated by a bell crank linkage 28.
