The cooling of steel strip leaving the rolling mill is controlled e.g. by adjusting the time of exposure to cooling spray, the rate of coolant flow, or the time allowed for cooling by radiation, according to formulae obtained by theoretical analysis. Where cooling is by liquid the relevant formula is FORM:1081954/C6-C7/1 or FORM:1081954/C6-C7/2 and where cooling is by radiation FORM:1081954/C6-C7/3 wherein #q1 = temperature of strip before liquid cooling. #q2 = temperature of strip after liquid cooling. #qw = temperature of liquid. c = specific heat of strip. #z = specific weight of strip. k = thickness of strip. a = heat transfer coefficient between strip and liquid. T1 = time exposed to liquid. T2 = time for cooling by radiation. H1 = temperature before cooling by radiation. H2 = temperature after cooling by radiation. FORM:1081954/C6-C7/4 Cs = Stefan-Boltzmann constant. c = surrounding temperature coefficient. FORM:1081954/C6-C7/5 The cooling conditions may be controlled continuously by computer, a block diagram being shown.
