[Also in Division B3] A machine for splitting hides P comprises an inclined frame 1 supporting an endless cutter blade 8 past which the hides are fed by means of driven rollers 12, 21, the roller 12 being frictionally driven by means of a roller 11 supported by a vertically-adjustable block 10 and being guided by (a) the face 13a of a guide bar 13 and (b) the faces 14a, 14e of a table 14 pivoted to the block 10. The frame has a bed 2 mounted in a recess thereof and has mounted thereon supports 3 at the front ends of which is mounted a vertically adjustable main bridge 4. The block 10 is pivoted, at 10a, to the frame and is vertically adjustable by means of hydraulic jacks 33. A plurality of compensating cylinders 23, 23a, 23b bear against the roller 21 and are supported by the elements 24, 24a, 24b of an intermediate bridge which is supported from the bridge 4, the end elements 24, 24b being pivotally mounted so as to be angularly adjustable. The blade 8 is carried by a pair of flywheels 6, 7 supported from the frame 1 and driven by means of reversible hydraulic motors (36, Fig. 7). The flywheels are adjustable towards and away from each other by means of hydraulic jacks (42, 43, Fig. 7). The edge of the blade 8 is sharpened by means of vertically adjustable driven grinding rollers 48, 49, the roller 49 being angularly adjustable so as to occupy a position on either side of the roller 48. The rear edge of the upper reach of the blade is supported by contact pieces 16 and by a further contact piece (56, Fig. 12) in the sharpening zone, the contact pieces being secured to an adjustable plate 17. In a modification, photo-electric means are provided to actuate a motor (69, Figs. 19 and 20) to displace the blade (8) to compensate for wear of the cutting edge thereof. Further, contact pieces also engage the rear edge of the lower reach of the blade and are secured to a plate which is adjustable simultaneously with the plate (17).
