An apparatus for cracking oil palm nuts of various sizes, comprises a rotatable double walled conical drum 3 having axial slits (6) (Fig 2 not shown) in its outer wall 4, the slits (6) widening from end 7 to end 8, and a casing 1 against which the nuts are thrown. On one side of each slit (6) is a partition 9 connecting the inner and outer walls 4 and 5. The partitions 9 extend outside and the drum 3 to form vanes 10, the radial extension of each vane 10 decreasing from end 7 to end 8. The nuts are fed by tube 12 and cone 16 into drum 3, the smallest nuts leave the drum at end 7 and the largest nuts at end 8, and the nuts are carried on vanes 10 and cast against breaking wall 1. The nuts are discharged from the drum more quickly than they are received.
