Paper is made from an aqueous suspension of paper pulp to which are added (1) a cationic water-soluble or water-dispersible organic polymer and (2) a water-solubilized polymer or copolymer of an alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated aldehyde. This polymer has an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0.3 dl/g and is formed by addition polymerization at the ethylenic group of the aldehyde. It may be a polymer of aerolein, methacrolein or their substitution derivatives, or a copolymer of such a monomer with another ethylenic monomer. It may be solubilized by reaction with sulphur dioxide, alkali metal bisulphite, ammonium sulphite or bisulphite or sodium hydroxide. A soluble copolymer of acrolein and sodium styrene-sulphonate can also be used. The cationic polymer may be a cationic starch, e.g. the reaction product of starch and an epoxy-compound containing a quaternary ammonium group or the corresponding chlorohydrix, a polymer or copolymer of such an epoxy compound, an addition polymer of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer possessing a quaternary ammonium group, e.g. a polymer of an alkyl-ammonium salt or of: FORM:1036848/D1-D2/1 where X is a water-soluble anion, or a condensation polymer, e.g. a polyester, polyamide or polyacrethane containing quaternary ammonium groups. The Specification includes lists of such materials. The pulp may also contain emulsifying agents, water-dispersible binding colloids, plasicizers, antioxidants, dyes, filters or alum. The product has good wet and dry strengths, dimensioned stability and fold endurance and may be used for facial tissue, hand towels, maps, filing cards, construction or wrapping paper containers.
