In a first step, a tool A, Fig. 3, forms two semicircular slots T adjacent the side 2 of the blank C, to define the lid 1 of the cap. The lid 1 remains connected to the side 2 of the blank only by two bridge portions (S), Fig. 6 (not shown), between the slots T. In a second step, the blank C is removed to a second tool B, Fig. 4, which breaks the bridge portions (S) to separate the lid 1 from the side 2 of the blank, bends over the top lip 7 of the blank side, and reduces the diameter of the upper part 302 of the blank side, thus forming an annular shoulder 202. In a third step, the half-formed cap is now removed to a third tool D, Fig. 5, which rolls-in the lower lip 5 of the cap skirt 102 and simultaneously imparts a conical taper to the reduced diameter upper part 302 of the cap skirt, so that the cap lid 1 is retained between the top lip 7 and the annular shoulder 202.
