A plug assembly comprises a resilient plastic plug 1 and a plastic attachment member 2 for securing to the side of a wash basin, the plug being annular and provided with a flange 5. Secured to the plug is a flexible connector chain 7. Withdrawal means housed within attachment member 2 comprise a metal spindle 14 rotatably mounted within bores 15, a torsion spring 16 provided for rotatably urging the spindle in one direction, which spring is connected at 17 to the member 2 and also at its other end to the spindle. Chain 7 is attached to the spindle to connect the plug 1 to the member 2. Spring 16 normally holds the plug in the closed position as shown in Fig. 3, but the plug may be manually drawn away from member 2 causing chain 7 to unwind from spindle 14 and thus the plug may be inserted in the outlet of the basin, being held there by friction. Cavity 13 is concealed by an annular disc 18 of resilient plastic through which disc passes chain 7 via hole 20.
