Quenching Liquids for use in the Heat Treatment of Metallic Materials

As a heat-treatment step metals are quenched into an aqueous liquid containing 0À07 - 1% by weight of a water-soluble polymer containing at least 5% by weight of -CO-NH- groups. Particularly preferred polymers are polyacrylamide, polymethacrylamide, and copolymers of acrylamide and methacrylamide with acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, maleic acid, vinylsulphonic acid, and alkali metal and ammonium salts of these acids, block copolymers having strongly hydrophilic terminal blocks being favoured. The quench liquid should have a #H value of 5 to 14.
