In a process for operating a steam-raising oilfired boiler, magnesium in the form of particles which will pass a 1/16 inch sieve and will be retained on a 100 B.S. sieve is injected into the boiler combustion chamber in a direction between 30‹ below and 60‹ above the horizontal and in a direction-as seen in plan-making an angle between 45 and 135 degrees with the direction in which fuel is injected, in such a manner that a heat reflecting layer of magnesium oxide is maintained on the surface of a predetermined section of the combustion chamber wall tubes. In the embodiment shown, magnesium is injected on a section comprising the four walls of the boiler between the planes indicated at 25 and 26, by means of injection nozzles 20, 21 and (22), (23) (Fig. 2, not shown).
