1, 096, 290. Conveying solids in liquids. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Nov. 2, 1966 [Nov. 4, 1965], No. 49151/66. Heading F1R. A method of simultaneously transporting a mineral salt in granular form, e.g. potassium chloride, in a pipeline carrying mineral oil, e.g. petroleum or crude oil, comprises mixing mineral salt granules of diameters up to 4, 000 microns with mineral oil and a stabilizer selected from the group consisting of alkali and alkaline earth metal salts of organic sulphonates, to form a stabilized slurry, and subsequently pumping the stabilized slurry through the pipeline. The mineral salt and stabilizer are separated from the mineral oil at the pipeline terminal, e.g. by filtering or brining. The stabilizer may be an alkyl napthalene sulphonate and may be present from 0À01% to 0À05% by weight of potassium chloride in the slurry. The slurry may comprise 150 parts by weight of mineral salt to 100 parts of oil. When the mineral salt is extracted by brining, the stabilizer can be removed from the brine by acidification, and reused.
