A method of measuring the proportion of nitrogen given off when heating substances, of any composition except one containing Mg or Be in metallic form, in vacuo beside the carbon monoxide also formed, by measuring physical properties such as thermal conductivity of the gas mixture given off, comprises mixing Mg or Be vapour with the gas mixture. The Mg or Be vapour may be produced by heating the test substance in a vacuum furnace together with the Mg or Be or in a separate evaporator within the vacuum furnace.
