Chromomycin a derivative and production thereof

The invention relates to chromomycin A3 hemisuccinate in which not more than three hydrogen atoms of alcoholic hydroxyl groups of chromomycin A3 are substituted by the corresponding number of -CO.CH2.CH2.COOH radicals; or alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium salts thereof. The hemisuccinate is prepared by reacting chromomycin A3 with succinic acid, succinic anhydride or succinyl chloride in a solvent at a temperature below 10 DEG C., preferably in the presence of pyridine. Chromomycin A3 hemisuccinate is effective against tumours and Gram-positive bacteria, is soluble in water and has low toxicity. It may be administered parenterally or orally.
