Novel compound 4-chloro 2-butenyl isocyanide having the formula is prepared by reacting 1,3-butadiene with substantially that quantity of chlorine or sulphuryl chloride which is sufficient to saturate one only of the olefinic double bonds of the 1,3- butadiene, and with at least the stoichiometrically necessary quantity of cyanogen chloride at a temperature of from- 30‹ to 50‹ C. and optionally at an elevated pressure, and recovering 4-chloro 2-butenyl isocyanide dichloride from the reaction mixture. Dichlorobutenes and 1-chloromethylallyl isocyanide dichloride (see parent Specification) are also formed.
