A combustion chamber 40 in a piston is closed by a member 46, separate or integral with the piston, in which is formed a plurality of gas flow openings 50, the central region of member 46 extending on both sides of the plane 3-3, Fig. 2, at right angles to the axis of the wrist pin 34 containing only a single aperture 52 through which fuel from the fuel injector is injected. The openings 50 direct the gases towards the intake and exhaust valves 18, 20 and the central unbroken portion of member 46 protects the bridge 26 between the valve ports. The openings 50 may comprise one or several orifices on each side of plane 3-3 or of arcuate passages.
