A method of testing, in respect of manufacturing products, comprises the steps of (a) specifying the values and the statistical limits of certain parameters of lots of elements to be used in the manufacture, (b) taking samples from the lots and determining by measurement with a computer-controlled testing system the actual values of the parameters and their statistical distribution, (c) determining by computer from this information the values and their statistical distribution of performance parameters that products manufactured from the sampled lots may be expected to exhibit, and (d) selecting for manufacture of the products those from the lots of elements determined to be acceptable in accordance with the determined expectation of product performance. An example in which a basic unit such as a one-stage stereo amplifier module is tested under computer control, is described.
