1296853 Aqueous solutions of cellulose ethers IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 13 Jan 1970 [31 Jan 1969] 5338/69 Heading C3A An aqueous solution of a cold-water-soluble/ hot-water-insoluble cellulose ether is prepared by adding crude cellulose ether to water heated to a temperature from 55 to 100% of the thermal gel point temperature of the cellulose ether, and thereafter cooling the water with or without gentle agitation. The cellulose ether may be methyl cellulose, methyl ethyl cellulose or a methyl or ethyl hydroxyalkyl cellulose. The crude cellulose ether may comprise particles having at least two dimensions not less than two millimetres. The crude cellulose ether particles may be dried, washed or may have a moisture content of 70% by weight or less before being added to the heated water. An essentially water-insoluble solid material such as clay or metal powder may be added to the heated water as soon as the particles of crude cellulose ether have broken down into a suspension of fibres.
