The charging of off-peak night storage heaters is controlled by the external air or wall temperature and the heat remaining in the heater. By higher external temperatures the commencement of charge time is shifted towards the end of the low-tariff period. Based upon the thermal characteristics of the system it is possible to establish a series of graphs relating storage heater temperature to the time required for charging for a range of outside temperatures. The graphs are organised such that any charging cycle is completed one hour before the end of the low tariff period.
