A composition for promoting strong stem growth in wheat comprises a phosphate fertilizer and a quaternary ammonium salt containing three methyl groups and an ethyl, vinyl, allyl, bromomethyl, 2-chloroethyl, 2-bromoethyl, or 2-bromo-n-propyl group. The phosphate fertilizer may be super or triple phosphate. The quaternary ammonium salt may be the chloride, bromide, sulphate, nitrate, phosphate, acetate, 2,4-dichlorphenoxy acetate, or 2-methyl-4-chlorphenoxy acetate. The proportion of quaternary ammonium salt may be 1-10% based on the phosphorus pentoxide content of the phosphate fertilizer. The composition may also contain a potash fertilizer.
