1,217,325. Measuring reaction rate. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 30 April, 1968 [30 Jan., 1967], No. 4478/67. Heading B1X. The rate of a chemical reaction is measured for use for example in controlling polymerisation reactions by a method comprising temporarily isolating a sample of the reaction mixture and maintaining it under adiabatic conditions while measuring its change of temperature with time. For intermittent testing, in the embodiment of Fig. 1 (not shown), an insulated dip-leg (1) containing a thermometer (3) is immersed in the reaction mixture. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown), a sample is sucked from the reaction vessel into an insulated testing vessel, and returned to the reaction vessel after testing. For continuous testing, for example using the apparatus shown, material from the reaction vessel is continuously pumped at a constant rate round an insulated by-pass circuit having thermometers 38 at the inlet and 39 at the outlet of the testing tube 31. The flow is adjusted to give the required residence time in tube 31 and may be checked by collecting the outflow for measurement in flow rate check 37. In copolymerisation processes in which the monomers have different rates of polymerisation, the reaction rate may be determined as above then used to control the rate of feed of at least one of the monomers.
