1,237,224. Vehicle safety harness. KLIPPAN G.m.b.H. 16 Dec., 1968 [15 Dec., 1967], No. 59682/68. Heading A3V. [Also in Division F2] A plastically deformable damping member 8 for a vehicle safety belt 6 comprises at least one metal tape 8 or 9 withdrawable from a storage coil and continuously deformable by a fixed reaction member 19 when the belt 6 is drawn from the shaft 4 on which it is wound, an end of each tape being connected to the shaft at 7 so that withdrawal of a length of belt from the shaft causes each tape to wind on to the shaft. The shaft 4 is rotatably mounted between chassis walls 2, 3, and two tapes 8, 9 are held adjacent walls 2, 3 by the arms 15, 16 of a U-shaped bracket. The reaction member 19 is located, as shown, to maximise the work of deformation performed on the tapes during rotation. Member 19 is so spaced from shaft 4 that the tapes abut member 19 when coiled on to shaft 4, avoiding sudden jolts otherwise arising when the ends of the tapes are reached. A hole 22 may be provided in the chassis base to allow room for the tapes when on shaft 4. The belt 6 may be anchored to the shaft 4 by passing an end through slot 5, or may be connected, preferably detachably, to a steel cable or wire wound round shaft 4, Fig. 6 (not shown). The cross-sectional area of the tapes may be varied along their lengths to obtain any desired damping characteristic. The chassis may be bolted to the vehicle by a bolt (not shown) passing between arms 15, 16, and a plastics cover may be provided.
