A web B passing from a driven winding roller 1 to a driven winding roller 2 or vice versa is formed into a loop by two rollers 6, 7 connected to a doubly bent arm 10 controlling a regulator 5 which regulates the friction drives connecting a motor to the winding rollers 1, 2. The loop is immersed in liquid 4 in a vat 3. The roller 6 is arranged at one end of the arm 10 and the roller 7 is mounted on a bolt 12 pivotally interconnecting two levers 13, 14, one 14 of which is pivoted at 15 to the vat 3 and the other 13 of which is pivoted at 17 to the arm 10. Outside the vat the arm 10 is pivoted about a shaft 11 and is connected to the piston 19 of a pressure cylinder 20 by means of which any desired tension is imparted to the web. An increase in web speed owing to an increase in the diameter of the windup roll tends to shorten the loop of web in the vat and consequently the arm 10 is rocked and actuates the regulator 5 which adjusts the speeds of the rollers 1, 2 to maintain the same tension in the loop. The length of the loop thus remains constant.
