A press assembly for the movable tool 4a of a press comprises a tool support 4 acting as a piston 10 in a cylinder 1 and having either a non-rotatable not 3 engaged with an axially fixed rotatable spindle 2 or a non-rotatable spindle engaged with an axially fixed rotatable nut, Fig. 2 (not shown). In the first embodiment the spindle has a flywheel 15 so that as the piston is moved downwards the spindle rotates the flywheel. When the tool meets the workpiece the downward movement stops and the inertia of the flywheel causes the tool to press the workpiece. The piston is moved by compressed air controlled by a valve 17 and returned by venting the space above the piston whilst pressurizing the space 11 under the piston with air or hydraulic fluid. The support 4 is guided by springs 12 engaged in grooves 13 in the cylinder wall. The compressed air may contain oil spray to lubricate the assembly parts. In the second embodiment the nut acts as the flywheel. The piston is returned by a spring (29) but may also be fluid assisted.
