[Also in Division G5] A display device comprises a plurality of light transmitting rods 6 extending through a pack of light-transmitting plates 1, an electroluminescent light source 17 supplying light via the plates and means 7 for directing said light along a selection of the rods to provide a visible character. The light is directed by notches in the rods and each plate provides a separate character. The rods may be of circular, triangular, quadrangular or polygonal crosssection and the light may be directed by a length of rod of decreased cross-section obtained by hot stretching. Alternatively, each rod can comprise a plurality of coaxial lengths each having one end bent towards a light source (Fig. 20, not shown).
