The trough, Fig. 3, is provided with wires 16 and inverted V-shaped deflectors above channels 14 in its base so as to align the French beans being fed thereto. The width d of the gaps between the plate members 7 and the trough 6 is adjustable by means of angle irons 10 attached to the upstream end of each plate member. In operation, the vibration of the apparatus by means of a flywheel 4 and connecting rods 2 causes the beans to move from the trough 6 along the channels in the plates 7 to a discharge plate 12. The ends and waste from the beans are too small to cross over the gaps between the plates and fall into a hopper 8.
