A method for the production of mono chlorine toluenes with a high content of p - chlorotoluene by chlorination of toluene

Monochlorotoluene containing a relatively high proportion of p-chlorotoluene is made by treating toluene with chlorine in the presence of a catalyst comprising an iron halide and sulphur or a sulphur halide. A typical catalyst comprises ferric chloride and sulphur chloride. The process may be effected batchwise or continuously. Examples are given.
