The packing ring (3) is placed over the mandrel (4) which is mounted in the angular support (1). The mandrel can be rotated by a drive (5) from a motor (6). A revolving groove (7) serves as an axial stop for the applied packing ring (3), the shape of the groove matching the sprung edge (8) of the packing ring. The outer diameter of the mandrel is over-size for the ring, and the base diameter of the groove corresponds with the required spring lip diameter when fitted in position. Thus the ring springs into position so that the edge (12) is precisely located and the axial measurement of the ring can be made by the clamped clock gauge (13).
