[Also in Division C1] Organic compounds are oxyhalogenated by reaction with a hydrogen halide and oxygen in the presence of a 13X zeolitic molecular sieve within which is deposited or exchanged a metal of Group Ib, IIb, Vb, VIb or VIII, or a rareearth metal of Group IIIb, of the Periodic Table. Metals specified are copper, silver, gold, zinc, cadmium, mercury, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, manganese, technetium, rhenium, iron, cobalt, nickel, ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium and platinum, those exemplified being copper, chromium and iron. The catalyst may be used in fixed, moving or fluidized beds. Inert gas diluents, e.g. nitrogen, helium and organ may be used. Temperatures specified are 500- 1500‹ F. and pressures specified are atmospheric pressure to 150 p.s.i.g. Lists of hydrocarbon starting materials are given, the exemplified process being the oxychlorination of ethylene to vinyl chloride.
