1,271,865. Programmed control of printing. FILMTEXT Ltd. May 10, 1969, No. 23946/69. Heading G3N. A control device for a machine for subtitling cinema films is controlled by a programme tape so that the stamping force is adapted to the size of the sub-title of the block. As shown, Fig. 1, a magazine 1 contains subtitle blocks 2 which are transferred individually by a cylinder 7, in accordance with a predetermined sequence, to a station 8 where they are held against a stop by a spring-loaded finger 10. The blocks are transversely pressed against a film 17 by a piston 11 to apply a sub-title. The transfer of a new block to the station 8 causes the previous block to be displaced to a position where a rod 12, in response to the movement of a piston 13 in a cylinder 15, deflects it into a magazine 16. The control device is operated pneumatically in response to the actuation of switches by a stepped slotted programme-tape. The control device, Fig.3, is fed with compressed air from a line L1 and the presence of a slot in the tape, not shown, selects a switch K2 causing closure of contacts to admit air through a valve V1 to displace a control piston valve 38 in a cylinder 37. Pressure is thereby applied to a cylinder 15, to displace the implemented subtitle, a pressure regulating device T and a line valve V4. The pressure regulating device T comprises a piston 30 which is displaceable under applied pressure to move a rod 31 to a limit of travel set by the selected switch K2 through a solenoid-actuated stop-lever 25. The piston 31 incorporates a rack engaging a pinion 33 connected to an eccentric disc 34 which adjusts a pressure regulator 36 through a spring-loaded arm 35. The regulated pressure, through the valve V4, is fed via a film-synchronized valve V5 to a cylinder 22 to depress the sub-tilting piston 11 against the pressure of a spring 23. The actuation of a switch K5 energizes a solenoid-valve V2, which vents the cylinder 37 and energizes a solenoidvalve V3 to displace a piston 37 displacing a slide 42 which causes pressure to be applied to the transfer cylinder 7.
