Plant growth inhibitors with low phytotoxicity are of formula (I):- where R1 and R2 = H, hal, alkyl, CN, CO2 alkyl, or NO2; one Q = H, hal, alkyl, CN, CO2 alkyl or NO2, and the other = circled positive -CH2NR4R5R6.X circled negative, where R4, R5 and R6 = opt. substd. alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, opt. substd. aryl, a heterocyclic residue or NR4R5 together complete a heterocyclic gp.; and X = an anion. (I) are prepd. by condensing analogues where one Q = CH2Hal, with a tert. amine -NR4R5R6, and (opt.) subsequently replacing the anion.
