Broken wires in a metallic, e.g. steel, winding rope are detected by passing the rope 11 through a split circular permanent magnet 10 and a pair of sensing coils 12, the outputs of the coils being multiplied together, thereby eliminating "noise", and displayed by a pen galvanometer. Preferably, the outputs of the coils are applied to the multiplier, via a pair of amplifiers, whose gains are inversely proportional to the speed of the rope, so that the inputs to the multiplier are independent of rope speed, Fig. 3 (not shown).
