1375187 Seals AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 20 June 1972 [13 July 1971] 32881/71 Heading F2B A seal between relatively rotatable members 10, 12 such as in an automatic power transmission mechanism comprises a ring 20 having axial and radial clearance in a groove 18, the arrangement being such that pressure in the high pressure region 17 urges the ring into sealing engagement with both a wall of the groove and a cylindrical surface 16 to be sealed and that a restricted passage 31 conveys a small amount of fluid from the groove to a low pressure region for cooling purposes. In the mechanism shown, composite rings 20 are provided one each side of the fluid pressure source 17 for operating a piston 35, each ring being formed of a metal spring ring 22 and a continuous ring 21 of P.T.F.E. To convey heat from the space 17 to the sump, the fluid is bled via both the restriction 31 and a restriction 32.
