In a furance for the pyrolysis of hydrocarbons to form unsatd. hydrocarbons, in which the hydrocarbons pick up heat from the refractory materials as they flow through passages therein, discontinuities are provided in the walls of the passages to induce turbulent flow in the hydrocarbons passing through.
