1375533 Motor vehicles SNAM PROGETTI SpA 16 Feb 1973 [17 Feb 1972] 7862/73 Heading B7H [Also in Divisions G3 H1 and H5] A vehicle suitable for introduction into and movement along a pipe-line and for carrying means for performing operations inside said pipe-line, e.g. X-ray apparatus 8, includes a D.C. electric motor 3 for driving the vehicle, a battery 6 to supply driving power to the motor 3, an internal combustion engine 24 driving an A.C. generator which charges the battery 6 (and also supplies the power for the X-ray apparatus 8), and electric control means including control circuitry connected to control the motor 3 and a receiving device 61 for initiating a controlling action of said circuitry in response to an appropriate control device (not shown) which is positioned outside the pipe-line during use of the vehicle and is not electroconductively connected to the receiving device 61. As described the vehicle includes a main part having chassis 1 which carries the motor 3 driving wheels 2, battery 6, control circuitry 5 X-ray apparatus 8 and a magnetically operated receiving device 61, and also includes a semitrailer part having a chassis 22 connected to the main part by a universal coupling 19. The chassis 22 carries the internal combustion engine 24, a governor 36 for the engine 24 and an A.C. generator 25 driven by the engine 24. The generator 25 also includes D.C. windings and can be used as a D.C. motor to start the engine 24 using power from the battery 6. The exhaust 28 from the engine 24 is discharged behind a diaphragm 30 carried by the vehicle and having a seal 31 which engages the pipe-line. The wheels 2, 4, 23 are of the type described in Specification 22227/72, and have rollers arranged around their peripheries which allow the vehicle to follow curves in the pipe-line. The receiving device 61 consists of a magnetically operated switching device which can be actuated by a magnet outside of the pipe-line, and is used to control the motor 3 and to operate the X-ray apparatus 8.
