In machining, finely-divided carbon fluoride (I) is used between the material being machined and the tool. The use of (I) leads to greatly improved economy in the polishing, grinding and other machining processes for metal and glass. (I) is mixed with a machining aid (solid grinding or polishing particles) and opt. a binder or dispersant (contg. a surfactant). (I) is a powder (7, pref. 3-5 mu) obtd. by reacting a carbonaceous material with F2. It is a solid lubricant with laminar structure and excellent resistance to fracture and attrition at high load and high speed. Its properties are at least as good as those of fluorinated resins. Its functions depend on mechanical-chemical and lubricating action low surface tension and high decompsn. temp.
