Removing toxic metal ions from waste waters - - by treatment with xanthate followed by a coagulating agent

Hg, Cd, Cu and Pb ions are very effectively removed from waste waters by adjusting their pH to 3-12; adding 0.5-10 equivs. of a xanthate (e.g. sodium isopropyl xanthate); and then a coagulating agent (pref. a combination of montmorillonite and alum, opt. with addition of a non-ionic polymeric coagulant, pref. polyacrylamide, polyoxyethylene, etc.); and removing the resulting ppte.
